About The Highlighter
The dataset and reporting of record for the elite American college admissions cycle. Built anonymously, in public, by the applicants themselves.
Every admissions dean models yield internally and pays a six-figure consulting contract for what this dataset assembles in real time — from the applicants themselves.— Editorial Advisor · Former Dean of Admissions
What this is
Every selective American college admissions cycle generates an enormous amount of signal — score distributions, cross-admit clusters, yield patterns, the gap between dream school and matriculation — that the public never sees. Admissions offices model it internally. Independent consultants charge five and six figures for stitched-together versions of it. Applicants get told to trust the process.
The Highlighter is the dataset and reporting of record for that cycle, assembled in the open. Applicants submit their cycle anonymously through The Record — schools applied, decisions received, where they matriculated, the reflections that don't fit on an application. The system aggregates by school, by cohort, by hook, by stat band, by tier perception. Individual records are never published.
Method
Everything on the site is computed live from the submitted dataset. We don't fabricate numbers. We don't paraphrase admissions outcomes. When a metric can't render — because we don't yet have enough cycles on file for a given school — it stays blank rather than fake.
Why this exists
Admissions officers have decades of cross-tabulated data on yield, cross-admits, fit, and outcomes. They run that data through proprietary modeling firms before every cycle. Applicants — the actual people making one of the most expensive decisions of their lives — get holistic platitudes and a personalized fit conversation.
The dataset alone can't close that gap, but it narrows it. An applicant looking at Brown can see how many people who got into Brown actually went there, where the rest ended up, what the admitted cohort's GPA and SAT distribution looked like, what percentage of applicants reported being recruited or legacy, and what the cycle's overall self-graded experience was. That's not the same as having an admissions office's full picture. It's a lot closer than the brochure.
